Our AI

About our AI

I know a lot of pastors and church members feel uneasy about AI, and some of that caution is healthy. This page explains plainly what Kept Word's AI does, what it doesn't do, and how we handle your church's words and your people's questions.

1. What the AI actually does

When someone asks a question in the chat on your church's website, we search your church's own sermons for the parts that best match it. If your church has turned it on, we also search your church's public website pages, for practical things like service times, kids' ministry and events.

Then the AI writes a short, plain-language answer from those passages only. Each answer links to the exact moment in the sermon video and names who preached it. That's all it does.

2. How accuracy and verification work

  • Only your church's sources. Answers come from your sermons and, if you opt in, your public website pages. Not the internet at large.
  • Every answer shows its sources. You can click through and hear it in your pastor's own words.
  • The right speaker gets credit. Every sermon is credited to the person who preached it, including guest speakers. Facts from your website are labeled as coming from the website, never put in a preacher's mouth.
  • Website answers show a "checked" date, so you know how fresh the information is.
  • It says when it can't find something, instead of guessing.
  • We keep testing. Anyone can rate an answer with a thumbs up or down, and I read that feedback to keep improving the answers.

AI isn't perfect. It can occasionally get something wrong or miss something. That's exactly why every answer links back to the source.

3. What it is not

  • Not a pastor or counselor. It can't pray with you, know your situation, or care for you the way your church can.
  • Not a source of new teaching. It only reflects what your church has already taught.
  • Not a general internet chatbot. It won't answer from the web, and it won't wander into news or politics.
  • Not a replacement for reading Scripture, for small groups, or for being part of a church family.
  • Not for emergencies. Anyone in crisis should contact a real person right away: their church, a trusted friend, or emergency services.

4. Data and privacy

The short version (full details on our privacy page):

  • No cookies, no analytics, no tracking, on our site or in the chat.
  • We don't save chat questions, unless someone rates an answer. Rated answers are kept for 12 months, without IP addresses.
  • The AI company that writes the answers (xAI) doesn't keep the questions once the answer is written, and doesn't train its AI on what we send.
  • Sermon audio is deleted once it's transcribed.
  • Your church owns its sermons and transcripts. If you leave, you can take a copy with you, and we delete your library within 30 days.

5. Human involvement

This isn't a sign-up-and-hope product. I personally set up every church. Your church decides which sermons and website pages it draws from, and we can configure which topics it should steer away from and who people should be pointed to when they need a real person. I add new sermons every week, and I read the feedback people leave.

6. Our theological stance

We see this as a tool that points people back: to their pastor's teaching, and through it to Scripture. It isn't a substitute for the Holy Spirit, for prayer, for the local church, or for pastoral care. If it helps someone find a sermon, hear their pastor again, and then open their Bible or call their church, it's doing its job.

Kept Word is a Christian company. You can read our Statement of Faith.

7. Power and energy

People sometimes ask about the energy AI uses. The AI behind our chat is Grok, from xAI. At its Colossus data center in Memphis, xAI has built one of the largest battery installations in the country, and is paying for the substations and grid upgrades that serve the site. Under its agreement with the local utility, the data center must cut back its use of grid power when demand is high, and xAI says it disconnects from the grid entirely during extreme heat or cold so homes and businesses come first, running on its onsite batteries instead. Frequently asked questions

Can the AI make things up or go off-script?

It's built to answer only from your church's sermons and opted-in website pages, and to say so when it can't find something. Like any AI it can occasionally get a detail wrong, which is why every answer links to the source so you can check it.

What happens to questions people ask?

They're used to write the answer and then they're gone. Nothing is saved unless someone rates an answer, and those are kept 12 months without IP addresses.

Does the AI train on our sermons?

No. xAI doesn't train its AI on what we send, and doesn't keep it after the answer is written.

Who owns the transcripts?

Your church does. We use them only to run your church's chat and materials, and we never sell or share them.

Is this safe for kids and families?

The chat never asks for personal information. If someone says they're a child, it answers in simpler words, and Kid-friendly mode keeps answers simple for families.

What if an answer is wrong or incomplete?

Tap thumbs down and add a note if you like. I read that feedback and use it to improve the answers, and you can always email me at nick@getkeptword.com.

How is this different from ChatGPT or other church chatbots?

General chatbots answer from the whole internet. Ours answers only from your church's own sermons (and website, if you choose), links to the exact sermon moment, credits the right speaker, and doesn't use cookies or tracking.

Can we turn it off or take our data if we leave?

Yes. Ask for a copy of your transcripts, and we delete your sermon library, feedback and logs within 30 days of cancelling.

Will it replace our pastor or small groups?

No. It helps people find what your pastor has already taught, and points them back to your church for everything else.

What happens if someone asks about something sensitive, like a crisis, abuse or suicide?

The chat isn't a counselor or crisis line. We can configure topics for it to steer away from and who people are pointed to, so they're encouraged to reach a real person. Anyone in immediate danger should call emergency services.

Can we control which topics it answers or avoids?

We can configure that. During setup, you tell me which topics it should steer away from and who people should be handed off to.

Does it answer questions about other churches, politics or current events?

No. It only uses your church's own sermons and website pages, so it has nothing to say beyond what your church has said.

What if our pastor's view changed over the years?

Answers show which sermon they came from and link to it, so people can see when something was taught. If there are older sermons you'd rather leave out, tell me.

How does it handle guest speakers?

Every sermon is credited to the person who preached it, so a guest speaker's words are never attributed to your pastor.

Can it quote Scripture or answer Bible questions directly?

It answers Bible questions from what your church has taught in its sermons, not from outside commentaries or the wider internet.

Which AI company is behind it, and why?

The answers are written by Grok, from xAI. xAI doesn't keep the questions after answering and doesn't train on what we send, which matters to us.

Does it work in other languages?

Yes, with the multi-language add-on. Sermons in more than one language are transcribed in each, and people can ask in their own language.

Can members see who asked what?

No. Questions aren't saved or tied to anyone, and the chat never asks for names.

How long does setup take, and what do we need to provide?

About 10 minutes of your time: send links to your sermons (YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo, podcasts or files) and fill out a short form. I do the rest.

Can we try it before committing?

Yes. Every plan starts with a 30-day free trial using your 25 most recent sermons. Nothing is charged during the trial, and if you cancel, you owe nothing.
